I really like the "digipak" format on the Portal-Swarth and Corrupted-Se Hace Por Los Asesinos CDs.

They are made to look like gatefold vinyls, with booklet inserted in one side and the CD in a protective cardboard sleeve, inserted in the other side of the digipak. If you know what I mean. So there is no more of those annoying plastic circular-teeth CD holder that are prone to breakage.

The material used on this digipak is of thick and heavy cardboard, so say goodbye to flimsy materials of the past!

Is there a name for this new style of digipak? Is it called hard cover Stoughton gatefold digi-sleeve? (I read this somewhere, correct me if wrong)

Is it widely used now?

I still like jewel case best, but this isn't bad at all.

I don't think I am familiar with what you are describing... could you post a picture?

I don't know how anyone can be confused about the description.. it sounded pretty straight-forward to me.

Still, the digipacks are prone to shelf wear and thus I prefer jewel cases (at least when I don't have the vinyl option).

It's called the "if you use conventional cd storage rack you are fucked digi-pak style"

The thing is durable I suppose, however it's still only a compact disc. They are always only going to be compact discs even if they start coming with pocket pussies built in with a vacuum system for blow jobs.

If you want decent packaging, you buy vinyl.

Hm, seems like a cool new idea. I don't own many digipacks, mostly jewel cases for me.

I don't see why people don't like compact discs though.

I have a lot of complaints about CDs being scratched in these packs, and they certainly don't hold up like jewel cases do in retail stores.

They're not that new. Pearl Jam used it for their Vitalogy album in 1996. They're actually fairly popular, I think. I've seen Converge, Death in June and Insect Warfare use them, as well.

I think they're called Mini LPs. They seem to be huge in Japan. The only album I own that has that style case is Bass Communion's Ghosts on Magnetic Tape.

While I hate standard digipaks, I like mini LPs, very durable, though I admit getting the CD out of the sleeve can be a bit of a pain.

This is what you end up with:

They're a little bit taller than your average jewelcase though. I like them better than regular digis, they're quite a bit sturdier and it is pretty cool to have a mini-gatefold in your hands.

It seems interesting but I never seen any digipak like that before...

I don't know why all the hatred against the digipak; normally I like them except those cheapily ones that the little things in the center that hold the CD start to break...

Sounds like what CMDistro calls a Mini LP, I have 2 Iced Earth cds whose packages match that description.

Ah I see, yeah i've got one, the special edition of Testament's The Formation Of Damnation album. The difference in height compared to older digipacks and standard jewel cases, annoys me when looking at my CD collection.

This was the first thought I had when I heard of this packaging. Considering how badly cds get scratched up in those cd binders, I think the last thing I'd want is something like that that's supposed to be the disc's permanent home.
