Post subject:  Obscure old-school death metal gems

if there is a thread like this already I didn't know, sorry

I love death metal, especially old-school death metal (though I don't know enough bands and albums as I should, I'm still a bit of a n00b :nono:), and you should too. There are DM albums we are all familiar with, like Scream Bloody Gore, Mental Funeral, and Tomb of the Mutilated.
But what about the more obscure albums of this style? There are so many gems. What are ones you like? Here are some of mine:

Image

Broken Hope - Swamped in Gore

This album is high quality OSDM, with awesome, pukey vocals, reminiscent of Obituary but much deeper.

Image

Mortification - Scrolls of the Megilloth

A solid DM album by any standard, quite thrashy, ignored often due to Christian lyrical content. Great riffs, some pretty ferocious vocals. The first DM album I ever bought, some of those riffs bring back memories and result in interesting synesthaesia, more so then most metal because of the album's significant place in my metalhead history.

It's not really old-school (actually, it's more of "old-school worship") but Bloodbath is an amazing band. Axe is a beast at drumming and Mr. Akerfeldt makes the devil proud with his signature growling.
I'm doing some Tech. Death searches and I'm coming up with some great results (Psycroptic, Sinners Bleed, Obscura, Mechanism, Carcariass, Gorod, Pavor...). Not to mention the mighty Sceptic (Jacek Hiro possess great talent and Urbas is an amazing songwriter. The band who made me like Tech. Death). So yes, Tech. Death is becoming my fav sub-genre of Death Metal.

I might dig in for some Blackened Death too. I think it will be worth it.

Here are some of my favorites:

Image

Antropomorphia - Necromantic Love Songs

Image

Hazael - Thor

Image

Rippikoulu - Musta Seremonia

Image

Sempiternal Deathreign - The Spooky Gloom

Also Timeghoul's demo Tumultous Travelings

Good stuff.

If Broken Hope is obscure, then so is Desultory:
Image
Into Eternity is an icy cold classic, not like most old school Swedish death metal it is more melodic and atmospheric rather than balls out heavy.

This is a serious contender for best DM album to ever come out of Sweden, Runemagick - The Supreme Force Of Eternity:
Image
They are mostly known for their death/doom albums but this is like what Soulside Journey is to Darkthrone, awesome but underappreciated.

What about Baphomet's The Dead Shall Inherit?

I say that's definitly a classic old-school death metal album, highly overlooked. It should be up there with Scream Bloody Gore and Altars of Madness though.

Not really obscure, but one of the most underrated DM albums of all time is MONSTROSITY "Imperial Doom". Awesome record all around. Killer drumming, sick vocals, raw yet loud production.

Image

Also MORPHEUS DESCENDS "Ritual Of Infinity" seems to me to be generally overlooked when it comes to old school DM gems.

Wombbath - Internal Caustic Torments

Quality death metal, it has the riffy sound of 90's Swedish Death but its heavier. Its got a nice thick sound and pretty low growls.

Image
Depravity (Fin) - Silence of the Centuries

Good stuff from Finland that basically follows the swedish formula. This shows a more melodic, dark sound

There's lots of um. Do an advanced search for Death Metal from Sweden(or anywhere in Europe) from 1988 to 1993.

Abhoth - Swedish Death Metal
Image
Accidental Suicide - Death Metal from the US
Image
Belsebub -Rather unknown Swedish Death Metal
Image
Cadaver - Norwegian Death Metal, wait not Black Metal?
Image
Carbonized - Avantgarde Technical Death Metal/ Grind from Sweden
Image
Carnage - Fairly well known. But worth a mention
Image
Cemetery Earth - Unknown Swedish group that fell off the face of the earth
Image
Crab Phobia - again^
Image
Creepmime - Progressive Death Metal godliness hailing from the netherworld
Image
Drakar - Not quite Death Metal. Strange Death-Thrash from Czech Republic
Image
Electrocution - Technical Death from Italy
Image
Festerday - pre-...And Oceans
[no album cover]
Goddefied - Death Metal from Sweden.
Image
Grotesque - Death Metal from Sweden
Image
Hetsheads - More Swedish Death Metal.
House of Usher - Released two demos and disbanded.
Infester - Death Metal from Sweden. Also one from the U.S.
Jumpin' Jesus -German Death Metal, crushing.
Krabathor - One of the first bands from the Czech Republic.
Legion - Polish Death Metal, akin to Vader and the like
Lemming Project -Crushing Death Metal from Germany in the early 90s.
Leukemia - Even more Swedish Death Metal.
Liers in Wait - Death Metal from Sweden with clean vocals.
Loudblast - French Progressive Death Metal
Macabre End - pre-God Macabre
Macrodex - Later became Crypt of Kerberos
Mangled Torsos - German Death/Grind
Morbid Vision - The one from Poland
Mordicus - Finnish Death Metal, a favourite of mine.
Morpheus - Swedish Death Metal. They don't get as much praise as deserved.
Nihilist - pre-Entombed
Nirvana 2002 - Not the one from Seattle, douche. The Swedish one.
Phlebotomy -Greek Death Metal.
Psychic Crush - 9 plays on last.fm Kvlt enough?
Purtenance - Finnish Death Metal post-Purtenance Avulsion
Sorroricide - Icelandic Death Metal, excellent stuff
Thanatos - Death Metal from the Netherlands
Timeghoul - Relatively unknown Progressive/avantgard-ish Death Metal
Traumatic Voyage - Bizarre
Winter - Crusty Death-Doom.
Wombbath - Crushing Swedish Death Metal

I'll finish the rest of the album covers later.

Immortalis - Indicium De Mortuis

Very dark, tainted, and has use of keys to bring out a more ominous tone. Brooding and haunted are what lurks through the tracks of this album. Very reflective of the cover art.

Image Very good, solid Swedish death... The Vader-esque blast beats hooked me in.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Unconventional rhythms and audible bass abound.

And of course you can't forget...

Convulse - World Without God

There's much more to this album than just a killer title. Finnish death metal with sick vocals.

Image

Vomiturition - A Leftover

Very energetic death metal from Finland. This band was formed by members of Cartilage.

Image

Megaslaughter - Calls from the Beyond

One of the most evil sounding death metal albums around that also presents an oldschool sound.

There's tons of them. Glad to see Wombbath and Authorize mentioned. Two of my favorite swedish bands.

The awesome thing about this album is that its free from the band themselves.

Also, its awesome.

Fact. I'm new to this forum, what are the rules regarding mediafire/megaupload/whatever links? Other ones I've posted on have prohibited it. If this one doesn't, maybe this can be an upload thread?

Well, 'old school' is just refers to an old style. The music can be in that style without being old in itself. Hence Tribulation, who despite all the praise they're getting have mostly made a shallow echo of Clandestine or Like an Ever Flowing Stream. Blood Mortized is a new band who have me more interested. Their self titled album is out this year and sounds promising.

If this band got more recognition and released a full-length as good as Caput Mortuum, they'd be up there with Dismember right now.

I don't think they're allowed, I know blogspots are banned from being posted.

In what context were you trying to post download links? If you want to download something, just look it up in Google with blogspot on the end. For example "Peice of Time blogspot" and you can easily find a download link. If that wasn't what you were going to do, tell me and I'll try and help.

oh, i know how to find stuff no problem, however some stuff, especially if it's obscure, takes a little bit more time to find and if everyone posting were to upload it and say "check this out" we'd have a big bunch of stuff to get right here in one space. just easier, that's all.
