Badass old school Belgian death metal. I had not heard these guys. They have a new album out in 2009, too.

I'm going to go right ahead and post this album I just remembered:
Image
Rudra - The Aryan Crusade

No, it's not NS, it's about the original definition of the word Aryan. This is Hindu stuff. Blackened death metal with a strong exotic and mystical tinge.

That song is just so fucking heavy. I haven't listened to it in years but can still remember every single riff; it's that memorable. I think I'm going to write a review for the vinyl soon - more people need to hear this masterpiece. It's too bad their other material, while still great, wasn't quite of the same caliber.

Oh I know man. Do you own it? I've been looking everywhere and I can't find it. It's so fun to play along with too, the riffs are so simple yet extremely effective.

It would be cool to see a review of it from you. I enjoy reading your oldschool death metal reviews.

Thanks man, and yes I do own the original but it's one of those vinyls that I would prefer to keep in my collection forever.

Carnifex (Fin) - Decadence

They also released a split with Festerday which is also really solid.

Atrocity (US) - Infected

More death grind but shitloads of fun to listen to.

Seance - Fornever Laid to Rest
Mercyless - Abject Offerings
Betrayer - Calamity
Deceased - The Blueprints For Madness
Cadaver - In Pains
Infestdead - JesuSatan
Sorrow - Hatred And Disgust
Necrophilia - Necrotic Narcosis
Exruciate - Passage Of Life
Impaler - Charnel Deity
Luciferion - Demonication (The Manifest)
Disgrace - Grey Misery

And finally it's not really obscure but it is extremely overlooked:

I normally don't like black/death metal but these guys are very good. Is the sound on that video the actual production of the CD? It could be a little clearer but other than that I really enjoyed the song.

The quality on the youtube video is much worse than the actual production. I don't know why it's so bad, I have the demo compilation and it's raw and heavy as hell without being screeching.

Morgoth- Resurrection Absurd
Image

Morgoth- The Eternal Fall
Image

Morgoth- Cursed
Image

This German group may only be obscure to the younger generation these days, but I can't not mention them. The two Ep's above are almost essential 90's DM, absolutely fucking awesome. I used to have them on the one cassette, until my fucking car got stolen...... The songs Female Infanticide and Pits Of Utumno from The Eternal Fall are some of my favourite DM tunes. Really good dark metal. Same goes for the Cursed album. Sold Baptism and Opportunity Is Gone are truly excellent.

Serpent Obscene- s/t
Image

I really like this one. It has an average rating on this site, but I think it's a bit unfair, as it has a unflinching old school approach. Anyway, this is kind of death/thrash and it breaks no new ground, but goddamn!! It makes me wanna bang my head! Songs like Evil Rites and Pestilent Seed(The Plague) just rip. Catchier than syphilis at one of Nero's toga parties too....

I have a couple of them, although some might be less obscure than others:

Image
Cianide - The Dying Truth (1992)
-These guys play some SLOOOOOOW, crushing death metal in the vein of Autopsy, but slower.

Image
Fester - Winter of Sin (1992)
-One of the rare Norwegian death metal bands. The vocals are very similar to something you'd hear in black metal.

Image
Mercyless - Coloured Funeral (1993)
-I believe Abject Offerings was already posted, so I figured this album should get a mention, too. This album sounds like Seance's first album with some Morgoth mixed in. Great stuff.

Image
Paramæcium - Exhumed of the Earth (1993)
-Awesome death/doom from Australia. While they are a Christian band, most of their lyrics are deep and thoughful.

Image
Wicked Innocence - Omnipotence (1995)
-As Falconsbane said "Fucked up, but awesome." Crazy, brutal, and something that the members of Demilich would be impressed with.

My favorite thing about this thread is looking at the album covers

For some reason, old looking album covers (80's or 90's) with artwork that was obviously done without a computer really appeal to me.

Yes! There's something very organic about these covers. It fits with the old, dirty production most of the albums have.

AFFLICTED - Prodigal Sun - 1992
Weird technical Swedish Death Metal. Released on Nuclear Blast, but quite obscure.

DISABLED - Faith Ablation - 1997 MCD
Crushing mid-tempo Death Metal from France. Released on Craziness Musix.
Their '95 demo Here Lies Your God also deserves a mention.

Image
CATACOMB - In the Maze of Kadath - 1993 demo/7"EP
French lovecraftian Doom/Death Metal. 7"EP on Drowned Productions, pro-tape on Phonoprodukt with 2 more tracks.

This is starting to stretch my memory, as most of these bands I have seen live only a couple of times a long time ago....

Abremelin(Aus)- Transgression From Acheron
Image

This is some great DM from the 90's, has that unmistakable feel about it. Have not heard it in a long time. Should try and track some down again.

Misery(Aus)- A Necessary Evil
Image

More well written and damn brutal Aussie DM from the 90's.

Crypt(Aus)- Crypt
Image

Only seen these guys live once, around the time of this Mcd. What I can remember of it though, it was fairly technical brutal DM. Rather good too.

Bludgeoner(Aus)- Bludgeoner EP
Image

Unashamed old-school brutal, stripped back DM. Put on a fucking awesome live show too. Tight and neck snappin'.

Anatomy(Aus)- Twisting Depths Of Horror
Image

This is a personal favourite of my collection in relation to Aus DM.

Picked up this gem from CM Distro for 2 bucks:

Thick sound with some real catchy riffs. Not highly original but very enjoyable and worth tracking down. Thanks, PhantomOTO!

The whole Australian death metal scene seem to be a well kept secret. Shame, seem to be many buried gems there.

A really good Aussie DM band is Discarnated. They are Christian, and I know that can be an issue for people, but damn, it is some excellent old school DM. Rowan London from Virgin Black is the vocalist. Check out the track "Gutted and Skinned" on YouTube.

I wish I could find the album but it's nowhere to be found. :nono:

If you like Misery, try The Dead. Same guitarist, or at least it was before he left them recently. Regardless, he played on their first album. A second one came out yesterday, I was at the launch gig.

I can only recommend one album:

God Macabre - The Winterlong, I dunno how "obscure" it is but it's probably, imo, the best, along with Necrophobic - Nocturnal Silence, Swedish death.

Just heard their EP. Quite good, even though the production kinda sucks. Definitely has got the melodic riffage of early Armorphis, that's cool.
