I have recently discovered this band, and I must say, I'm quite impressed. My only question is, how the hell did these guys get overlooked? They have some damn heavy riffs, a very catchy song catalogue, and were way ahead of their time.

What do you guys think of them?

I only have In For the Kill but it is a great album. Zoom Club is undoubtedly the best song on there; it is at times highly reminiscint (I can never spell that word correctly) of Rush and has an awesome jamming section in the middle of it.

I have most of their studio cds, all are pretty good.

They do have some monster riffs and I too am surprised they didn't get bigger.


I mean, their career wasn't short, so I'm guessing it was exposure. Either they didn't tour as much or their label didn't back them that much.

I actually liked Metallica's cover of Bread Fan better than the original. Kind of a cool influence there.

I disagree. I personally think Budgie's was better because it was heavier in it's time.

Budgie will always be better than Metallica.

With song titles like Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman, Hot as a Docker's Armpit & I Can't See My Feelings (covered by Iron Maiden, pretty cool version actually) you can't lose.

The bread fan riff is still heavy now, I'd say. Not so much in the bruality sense, but in the same way that the main riffs from Exciter and Suicide Solution are.

'You Know I Always Love You' is the most beautiful ballad I've ever heard. And what's great is, it's a sad, almost melancholic, slightly cheesy love ballad yet there's no big orchestra and it's over in less than two minutes!

I only got 'Never Turn Your Back on a Friend'. Bought in on vinyl a few years back and I really like it.
Actually... Budgie is what I always hoped Rush would have been...

I thought it was interesting how the guitar tone on Never Turn Your Back on a Friend sounded like it was scratching on a turntable if you listened closely, especially during Breadfan.

Budgie's debut album is arguably one of the heaviest albums ever. From that heavy, plodding riff in "Guts" to the that rockin' riff in "Rape of the Locks", the album screams truly fucking heavy metal.
