Avatar began life around 1977 as a hard rock band under the name Metropolis U.S.A., which featured Jon and Criss Oliva on vocals and bass respectively, Maynard McIntire on guitar, Vinny Greco on drums. They released a single that same year on Atlantis Records, with "Let's Get Rowdy" being the A-side and "Take Off With the Crowd" the B-side, and by 1978, the band had changed its name to Avatar.
