Founded in Oak Cliff, a neighborhood in Dallas. Oak Cliff used to be its own town, but was later annexed by the aforementioned.

The band name is a double entendre, initially referring to the meatus ear canal opening, but later also became a phonetic play on the phrase "me ate us".
