Jewel competed at the major Yamaha band battle competition EastWest '84, however they didn't win. Takao Sasaki was named the event's best percussionist though, and the band would join Mandrake Root records the following year. On EastWest '84's live album Jewel were featured with the song "Everybody Want You" which would later be reworked to just "Want You".
